Once you have set the password, you will have to enter the password after the VAIO logo appears to start your computer. The power-on password will allow you to protect your computer from unauthorized access. Write down your password and keep it safe and private from other people. Press the < or , key to select Security to display the Security tab, select Set Machine Password, and then press the Enter key. On the password entry screen, enter the password twice and press the Enter key. The password can be up to 32 alphanumeric characters (including spaces) long. To avoid this, you can change the Standby mode settings. n 127 N Customizing Your VAIO Computer To change the Standby mode settings 1 2 3 4 5 Click Start and then Control Panel. Change the System Standby settings. n 128 N Customizing Your VAIO Computer Using Hibernate Mode In Hibernate mode, the state of the system is saved on the hard disk and power is turned off. The power indicator light is off in this mode. To activate Hibernate mode Press the Fn+F12 keys. The Hibernating screen appears and the computer enters Hibernate mode. Click Hibernate. To return to Normal mode Turn on the computer by pressing the power button. If you press the power button for more than four seconds, the computer will turn off automatically. n 129 N Customizing Your VAIO Computer If you do not use the computer for a long period of time, put the computer into Hibernate mode. This power saving mode saves you the time of shutting down or resuming. It takes more time to return to Normal mode from Hibernate mode than from Standby mode.
