Set the Digital recording level with the DIGITAL REC LEVEL control. 
Start playback of the source,  adjust the recording level,  then stop the source. Before pressing the (DIRECT REC SELECT) 1 TRACK button or choosing 1 TRK from the REC MENU,  you need to choose a track to record:
