Pioneer is on the leading edge of DVD research for consumer products and this unit incorporates the latest technological developments. Please read through these operating instructions so you will know how to operate your model properly. [. . . ] It is especially suited to music sources with deep bass and a strong rhythmic feel. This is very similar to the Virtual Surround mode, and is available when you're listening through headphones to create an overall surround sound effect. When you select Stereo (available in the Surround mode only), you will hear the source through just the front left and right speakers. When playing 96 kHz PCM sources, or when headphones are connected, only the Stereo mode is available. Use the Advanced Surround modes to add DSP effects to a source playing in a surround listening mode. Standard ­ As Auto above, but can be used with Advanced Surround modes (see below). Stereo ­ Downmixes surround sources for playback through the front left/right speakers For a stereo source: 1 Press ADVANCED repeatedly to choose one of the sound options. 1 channel surround sound decoding, especially good for movies · dolby Pro Logic II Music ­ 5. 1 channel surround sound decoding, especially good for music · Virtual Surround Back ­ Simulated surround back speaker sound from the surround speakers · expanded ­ Extra wide sound stage · TV Surround ­ Surround sound from mono or stereo TV sound · Virtual Surround ­ Simulated surround sound from just the front left/right speakers · When headphones are connected, only the Phones Surround option is available · See also page 49­50 for more detailed explanations of these modes You can adjust the effect level of the Advanced Surround mode to get the sound that you want. You can't adjust the effect level of the 5-Channel Stereo or the Virtual Surround Back modes. Make sure that one of the Advanced Surround modes is on when you do this (see Using Advanced Surround on the previous page). You can change the preset number from the Recall Settings menu item. You can adjust any or all of the following picture quality settings: Depending on the disc and the TV/ monitor, you may not see the effect clearly. Motion ­ (US model only) Adjusts the motion and still picture quality when the player is set to progressive video output. PureCinema ­ (US model only) When watching DVD movies, PureCinema optimizes the picture quality. The default setting is Auto1, but if the picture appears unnatural, then set to On or Off, as appropriate. MNR ­ Adjusts the amount of mosquito noise (artifacts visible around the edge of an image caused by MPEG compression) reduction. Black Setup ­ Setup to correct the floating black color for better 3-dimensional realism. Chroma Delay ­ Adjust to correct the gap between the Y and C components in the video signal. (Note that for the US model, this setting only affects progressive video output. (US model only) Video on a DVD discs may be either video material (originally shot on video) or film material (originally shot on film). PureCinema adjusts the picture so that it matches more closely the picture quality of a cinema screen. [. . . ] DTS is a surround system different from Dolby Digital that has become a popular surround sound format for movies. Dynamic range The difference between the quietest and loudest sounds possible in an audio signal (without distorting or getting lost in noise). Dolby Digital and DTS soundtracks are capable of a very wide dynamic range, delivering dramatic cinema-like effects. Interlaced video A method of displaying a picture in which odd-numbered lines are updated in one pass, then even-numbered lines are updated in the next. [. . . ]
