[. . . ] Inspecting grips If you are unsure of the safety of your handlebar system, do not ride the bicycle; take the bicycle to your dealer for adjustments. If the grips slip or rotate, tighten the grip nuts with the Bontrager grip wrench (Figure 2). See page 10 for instructions on using a torque wrench with the Bontrager grip wrench. 4 WARNING Figure 2: Tightening grip nut with Bontrager grip wrench Adjusting grips Grip position, the lateral placement of the grips on the handlebars, is largely a matter of personal preference blending comfort, efficiency, and balance. Your hands should comfortably rest on the grips as you shift, brake, or steer the bike. Loosen the handlebar grip nut(s) of the grips, and the clamp bolts of the controls, just enough 5 that the grips and controls can be slid on the handlebar. Tighten the controls according to their manufacturer's instructions, and tighten the grip nuts as shown in Inspecting grips. 6 INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS These instructions explain the steps to install new Bontrager grips. The correct installation of grips is critical to the rider's safety, so this work should be performed only by an experienced mechanic. If you are not sure of your ability to correctly install these grips, have them installed by your Bontrager dealer. These parts must be compatible and the correct diameters for the grips to function correctly. If you are not sure if these grips are compatible with your bicycle, consult your dealer. Look for any dents, bending, or other deformation, and replace a damaged handlebar. Clean the handlebar, if necessary, prior to installation. 7 TO INSTALL GRIPS 1. Remove the old grips. To remove conventional grips, lubricate the inside surface of the grip with water or hair spray, and slide the grip from the bar. 2. Tighten the grip nuts with the Bontrager grip Figure 3: Tighten both grip nuts equally 8 wrench (Figure 3). From either end of the grip, the threading is "normal, " so turn clockwise to tighten. 5.
